Job Description:

As a Controls Engineer, you will play a crucial role in developing state-of-the-art automation systems. Working collaboratively with a team of professionals, you’ll contribute to the design and implementation of unique assembly, inspection, and test systems for precision-focused industries such as automotive, aerospace, defense, medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and industrial components.


  • Lead design efforts on assigned projects under the guidance of the Engineering Director.
  • Develop control system designs, creating detailed drawings with AutoCAD, covering power distribution, PLC, panel layouts, pneumatics, hydraulics, and instrumentation.
  • Author and document software, ensuring comprehensive coverage of project requirements.
  • Own budgets and schedules, collaborating with the Project Manager to establish cost-to-completes and release dates.
  • Coordinate with the Controls Assembly Department during project build phases to provide efficient solutions to challenges.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the Controls Design Department, fostering the growth of Level I and Level II Controls Engineers.
  • Formulate preliminary project schedules for effective team guidance.
  • Debug software post power-up, transforming machines into production-ready systems.
  • Actively participate as a team member during the installation phase of projects.

Desired Hardware Competency:

Your expertise in hardware should cover a range of components, including but not limited to:

  • PLC: Allen Bradley (CompactLogix, ControlLogix, SLC 500, PLC 5, MicroLogix), Siemens (416), Square D (Symax 50).
  • HMI: Allen Bradley (Panelview, Panelview Plus), Siemens (TP, OP Series).
  • Communications: Allen Bradley (Ethernet I/P, ControlNet, DeviceNet), Siemens (Profibus).
  • Variable Frequency Drives: Allen Bradley (Powerflex), SEW Eurodrive.
  • Robotics: Denso, Epson, FANUC, Kuka, Kawasaki.
  • Linear Actuators: Intelligent Actuator, Festo, Tolomatic, Rexroth.
  • Servos: Allen Bradley (Kenetics 6000, SERCOS Servo Drive Interface), Yaskawa (SGDV, SGDH).
  • Vision: Keyence, Panasonic, Cognex, DVT.
  • Data Acquisition: Keithley (DAS-1400, DAS-1600, PIO-120).

Desired Software Competency:

Your software proficiency should include:

  • PLC: Allen Bradley (RSLogix 5000, RSLogix 500), Siemens (Step 7, TIA Portal), Square D.
  • HMI: Allen Bradley (FactoryTalk View Studio, RSView, PanelBuilder), Siemens (ProTool).
  • Communications: Allen Bradley (RSNetworks, RSLinx, Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet), Siemens (Profibus).
  • Robotics: Adept V+, QuickBasic, Python, C++.
  • Servos: Allen Bradley (Kinetics 6000), SEW (Motion Studio).
  • Application Development: Visual Basic (v4.0, v5.0, v6.0), National Instruments LabWindows.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • 7+ years of experience in controls engineering related to custom automation.
  • Minimum of 3 years of design experience using AutoCAD software.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position involves leading and developing Level I and Level II Controls Engineers within the group or department on a day-to-day basis.

This is a full-time position with workdays from Monday through Friday, with an expected 48 hours per week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be necessary based on job demands. Travel is expected to be 20% or more per year.
